Dogs + Preventive Care & Wellness

  • Dogs are highly social animals that make wonderful pets. However, with the lifestyle and schedule of the majority of families, dogs must learn to spend a portion of the day at home alone, while their human family is away at school, work, shopping or recreational activities.

  • Immune stimulants, or immunostimulants, are herbs or neutraceuticals (nutritional supplements) that have a beneficial effect on the body's ability to fight infection, disease and injury.

  • There are many methods of restraining a dog on a lead; from collars to head halters and "one size (or type) does not fit all".

  • It is sensible to ensure permanent identification of your dog, no matter whether much loved family pet or valuable show dog. Permanent identification is primarily designed to provide an effective means of reuniting owners with dogs that have strayed.

  • If you know your dog has aggressive tendencies or is concerned in certain situations, then it is irresponsible to risk the health of others by not taking suitable precautions.

  • Neutering removes the sexual urge from both dogs and bitches. It can be carried out surgically when it is irreversible.

  • Most male animals (stallions, bulls, boars, rams and tom cats) that are kept for companionship, work, or food production are neutered (castrated) unless they are intended to be used as breeding stock.

  • We are all very much aware of the problems that obesity causes in people. What is not so commonly known is the fact that the same problems can affect our pets if they are overweight, therefore it is always prudent to ensure that weight is lost if necessary.

  • An oesophagostomy tube is a small flexible tube that enters the oesophagus or gullet via a small incision through the skin of the neck. Food is thus able to be delivered to the stomach bypassing the mouth and pharynx.

  • Wherever possible a wound will be closed and sutured in order to hasten healing. However if there is gross contamination or deep infection these wounds are left open, with treatment, to ensure drainage.
